New York: Day 2

It has been a long time, but I finally find myself with a little spare time on my hands and thought that I would catch up on all the blog posts.  Our second day in New York City was a Sunday.  We wanted to go to a Yankees game and the only time they were playing while we were there, was Sunday so we decided that we would go to the game.  I think we were a little nieve being from the West where the church is really populated.  We looked up a building and meeting time on the church website and decided that we would go to church in the Bronx because it was only two stops away on the subway from Yankee Stadium and the times worked out perfectly.  We didn't know anything about the surrouding burrows and headed on our way on the subway.  Needless to say, we were quite nervous when we got off the subway and were in the ghetto.  The church building was such a beautiful and comforting sight when we saw it.
A few interesting things happened on our walk to the building.  The only people we saw on the streets around 10am were men holding brown bags.  My mother almost tripped on the 4 block walk to the church and fell into a man sitting outside a store.  Last, we passed a chicken restruant and Kari said, "Hey look guys, they have fried chicken.  We can go there for lunch."  Some guy riding by on his bike, looked at Kari and said, "You don't want that chicken, that's hood chicken."
Aside from the scary walk over, the Bronx ward that we went to was the sweetest ward I have ever been in.  The people just struggled to get the church and made huge sacrifices to be there.  Walking into the chapel, we felt so much love among the members.  It was fast and testimony meeting and when we left, everyone said it was one of the best sacrament meetings we had ever been to.
After church we were bad and went to the Yankees game.  The stadium is amazing and beautiful.  We had such a good time walking around and exploring everything.  The game was fairly boring and we left early even though my mom wanted to stay for the entire thing.  She would be a great Yankee fan.

The view of the Bronx from the stadium.  It looked like a postcard with buildings just set in it digitally.  It was very cool.

Later that afternoon, we made it over to the temple.  It was such a cool site to see the temple right in the middle of the city.  Todd and I were so mad that we didn't bring our temple reccomends with us.  They had missionaries at the temple and one was from AZ.  They told us people ask to take pictures with them all the time because they think they are from the cast of the Book of Mormon play on Broadway.

We wanted to see the Statue of Liberty without having to pay so we took the Staten Island Ferry and rode past it.  I couldn't get a good picture of it, and it was getting really dark, but here is a picture of the skyline and the financial district.  You can see where they are building the new towers in the old spot where the twin towers stood.

After sending the older ladies to bed, we went to Serendipity to get frozen hot chocolate.  It was so much fun.  I think we were a little giddy and tired and then we had quite the sugar buzz.  This was our second time during the weekend trying to get into the restraunt.  We thought that if we went really late at night (around 11) that we might be able to get into the place.  There was still a 1 1/2 hour wait but we got so lucky.  I went up to the host and asked him how long it would take for a party of four and he said that he had a table for a party of four available right then and that we were the party he was just coming to get.  We felt a little bad for slipping in front of everyone, but it sure beat waiting for a long time.  The food was delicious.  We just went for dessert but had a hard time with just that so we got chicken wings too.  All the sugar and spice made Todd sick but the rest of us had a great time.  Todd ordered some peach thing with ice cream.  I got the frozen hot chocolate which was yummy and Jeff and Kari each got a dessert.  Everything was so good.  I would totally go back!!
